Tarta Club Italia is a private, no profit association born in 2002.
The aims of the association are:
• to promote knowledge on chelonian natural history and conservation with special emphasis on Italian Mediterranean Tortoises and Turtles (Testudo graeca,T. hermanni, T. marginata, Emys orbicularis);
• to support fanciers, hobbyists and professional breeders in rearing, keeping, breeding all species of Tortoises and Turtles through updated information
• to build up a stud book of Italian Tortoise and Turtles breeders
Trough the past three years the main appointment has been the TARTARUGHE BEACH fair held in Cesenatico since 2002.
The fair was first intended as a competition where private owners could display their own Tortoise pets.
After the first edition the fair gained in popularity and the following year was planned to add a section to allow fanciers and breeders to sell, buy and exchange live Tortoises.
In the last edition (2004) the expo surface was again increased to include a Turtles section and a commercial pet-marketplace.
In 2005 the visitors were 10.000 with more than a 1200 specimens in the display section only.
In the 2006 edition the samples statements have been over 1500.
In the following editions, over 2000
During all the past editions the fair was supported by biologists, conservationists, herp veterinarians, and CITES officers.
Since its beginning the Tarta Club Italia has started a dialog with the Agriculture and Forest Ministry of the Italian Government to agree proper measures to control the illegal trade of endangered Tortoises and to control the exotic species.
FAmong the future projects of Tarta Club Italia are:
• to establish a chelonian center with a collection with educational and conservation purposes (breeding programs of selected species and specific geographic taxa).
• to build up a shelter to house unwanted and confiscated Tortoises and Turtles.
• to create a referral center for biological, environmental and veterinary information.
Since Tarta club Italia is a no profit association, nearly the whole work is done by volunteers and all the incomes are from the yearly fair and from private donations.
